Workshops - SUMMER 2018

Portrait Painting for Art Educators*

June 25- June 29, 2018      9:00 AM - 4:00 PM    Tuition: $550/ $350 for Art Educators                                                                 Studio Incamminati, Philadelphia, PA

Through a series of exercises, students learn principles and direct painting methods for painting a portrait from life.  Exercises begin with a dynamic approach to grasping the gesture of the head, and teach students to simplify and work from simple to complex. Studies progress from monochromatic “grisaille” painting to value and limited palette studies. Concepts covered include construction of the head with simple planes and anatomical landmarks, value relationships and modeling form. Limited palette exercises explore light on form and color temperature and will include the Zorn palette. Paint handling, edges, and the stages of developing a portrait will be explored in this direct, Alla prima approach. Morning sessions include shorter exercises, and afternoons extended three hour poses. Five different models give students the opportunity to study construction of the head as it applies to different individuals, and the chance to paint a variety of skin tones. Daily instructor demonstrations and discussions clearly explain concepts taught, and explore ways is which educators can apply the skills learned and lessons taught to the classroom.

Color Study Still Life Workshop

July 9- July 13, 2018    9:00 AM- 4:00PM     Tuition: $599.00    HAINES, ALASKA

This workshop will focus on basic principles essential to creating a still life in full color. Inspired by the Impressionists use of color, American artist Henry Hensche, developed a method called “color study”. It is a method of studying color based on direct observation and an understanding that color is relative and is influenced by the light source.  Students begin with a series of painting exercises utilizing simple objects, and learn to see the impact of the light source, and its effect on local color, temperature, and value. The concept of “color study” will be explored in depth painting  with the full Studio Incamminati palette, beginning with boxes painting simple planes, and progressing to painting a more developed still life. The instructor will demo and discuss each concept, followed by exercises where students put these concepts into practice. During the last two to three days, students will paint a longer still life using amazing native artifacts from the Tlingit tribe, provided by the Alaska Indian Arts in Haines, Alaska.

Studio Incamminati artist and instructor Natalie Italiano will conduct a three-hour painting demonstration Tues., July 10, from 6–9 p.m at the Sheldon Museum.
The demo is free to workshop participants and the general public.

Introduction to Figure Workshop for Art Educators*

Monday - Friday, July 30 - August 3, 2018     9 a.m.- 4p.m. Tuition: $550 /$350 for Art Educators,

Studio Incamminati,  Philadelphia, Pa

This workshop introduces students to the opening stages of figure painting with exercises and skills taught in Studio Incamminati’s Advanced Fine Art Program. Through a series of exercises that simplify information, students develop a logical approach to painting the figure from simple to complex. Exercises include gestures, grisaille, block-in, value study and limited palette form painting. Students develop the figure beginning with a gesture and then construct the figure using straight lines, angles and simple structural landmarks. Basic shapes and planes are massed in and wiped out, as the student learns to see from general to specific. Time is provided to develop an understanding of each skill through repetition of exercises. Instructor demos are given throughout the workshop and individual critiques are provided at each student’s easel.  Students come away with examples of each exercise and a clear understanding of the objectives. Exercises provide each artist with a strong basis for further study as well as enhancing their skills as educators. Discussions include suggestions for how exercises can be adapted for use in the classroom and implemented using other materials. This introductory class is open to all artists.
