Costumed Portrait Workshop
July 10- July 14, 2017 9:00 AM- 4:00PM Tuition: $599.00 Haines, Alaska Beginning with a monochromatic grisaille, students capture the gesture of the head and study proportions using landmarks, planes and basic facial anatomy. In the second stage, skin tones are added and values studied as students learn to build volume and create the illusion of light on form. Color study exercises will help students understand color temperature, how to see color as relative, and how it's affected by the light source. Planes, values and color are integrated in the third stage of the painting as students learn how to build a painting from life, seeing from simple to complex. Edges, paint handling and modeling form will be discussed. Short studies culminate in a two-day portrait utilizing the information learned. Students learn a cohesive painting process that can be used for all types of painting, and exercises valuable for further individual study. Daily instructor demonstrations accompany each exercise. Individual instruction at the easel will address each student’s level of skill.
Painting Demonstration Tuesday evening, July 11 ,6-9 PM, Sheldon Museum. Free to workshop participants and public. Register online or by Phone: 215-592-7910 www.studioincamminati.org
Portrait Painting Fundamentals Workshop
July 24- July 28, 2017 9:00 AM- 4:00 PM Tuition $599.00 Studio Incamminati, Philadelphia, PA Through a series of exercises, students learn principles and direct painting methods essential for painting a portrait from life. Exercises begin with a dynamic approach to grasping the gesture of the head with paint, and teach students to see and build from simple to complex. Studies will progress from monochromatic “grisaille” painting to value and color studies. Concepts covered include construction of the head with simple planes, anatomical landmarks, value relationships, and modeling form with values. Color study exercises explore basic color theory and the effect of light on form and include both full color and limited-palette exercises. Paint handling, edges, and the stages of developing a portrait are explored in this direct, alla prima approach. Daily instructor demonstrations and discussions clearly explain an approach to study influenced by the teachings of Nelson Shanks.
Evening painting demonstration will be conducted by Natalie and Studio Incamminati instructors. Open to the public. Register online or by Phone: 215-592-7910 www.studioincamminati.org
Figure Workshop for Art Educators*
July 31- August 4 2017 9:00 AM- 4:00 PM Tuition: $550/$350 Art Educators Studio Incamminati, Philadelphia, PA
Students are introduced to exercises and skills taught at Studio Incamminati. Through a series of exercises designed to simplify information about the model, students develop a logical approach to developing a painting. Studies include gesture, block-in, open and closed grisaille, value and color study. Students are taught a logical way to develop form through studying major planes of the figure, and given an introduction to anatomical landmarks necessary for figure painting. Time is given to develop an understanding of the goals of each skill through repetition. Instructor demos will be given throughout the workshop and individual critiques provided at student’s easels. Students come away with samples of each exercise and a clear understanding of its objectives. The exercises provide a strong basis for further study and enhance the artist's skills as educators. Workshop discussions include ways in which the exercises can be adapted for use in the classroom and implemented with other materials.
*This introductory class is open to all artists. Register online or by Phone: 215-592-7910 www.studioincamminati.org
